AfriGeneas Military Research Forum

Re: Beginning USCT Research
In Response To: Re: Beginning USCT Research ()

Rod and Art...I don't know if this was ever touched on, in this forum, since I am a newbie at starting military research--- either ancestry r familysearch, can't remember which right now there was a prompt sent that said on the 1910 and 1930 census there is a column that will tell you if that ancestor served in a war and which. Hopefully your ancestor lived beyond the 1910 census. Also I have this very bad habit of not looking at the entire screen on ancestry so I see I miss a lot. PENSIONS..if u r a member and type in the name of the soldier r his wife's name, and she may have applied for a war pensioner, you may find something there. Go to search and the military, look at the right side for topics. I am just begining this ALL OVER AGAIN, and AGAIN and Again. My gggrandfather and gggrandmother had very very common names Daniel and Mary Adams. There are many many people black and white with this name. Lawd Have Mercy On me!!.
I can't even depend on the birth year--that's common too. Daniel was born ca. 1834 Mississippi and was deceased by the 1910 census. Draft cards r notorious for added or subtracting 5 years to a birth year, even a age.

Also was informed by my special collections librarian the NORTHERN STATES instituted Draft Records and Mississippi would not have done so. So Daniel would have had to go North to register for the USCT.

And this Fold3..I am so glad I did not pay for the membership. I have the best librarians. I get it free through my library membership. Two of them r speakers and tvl to workshops so they know STUFF. All I have to do is CALL. Thank goodness for the St Louis County Special Collections, in Clayton Mo. There is a online sight that anyone can use. Check it out. :)
