Re: AA in the USCT's Using an Alias

Hello Mr. White,

Thank you so very much for your response!!!

I've contacted the great-grandson of Tobias Bowdry and sent him a copy of your reply. He was thrilled by your response and states he would be very pleased to exchange information from the CW pension file of Tobias Bowdry with the information you have on Joshua, Jane and William Simonton Bowdry from their estate records.

The email address for the great-grandson:
plumroom88@aol.com

My best wishes to the two of you in this effort.

Art Thomas

============================

William Simonton Bowdry was my ancestor, a GGG uncle. He was the son of Joshua and Jane Simonton Bowdry. It is well documented that Joshua owned a large number of salves. Tobias Bowdry is probably not related. Joshua died in Prentiss Co. MS. in 1850. I have copies of the probate records although they are in storage at the current time. I am interested because you mention the war records and I may be able to help with the estate records.

Bowdry background:

Tobias Bowdry from Tishomingo Co., MS served in the USCT, 27th Reg't Co. 'I' under the name of Wilson Jones. The Bowdry's having a copy of the discharge & pension papers for Tobias Bowdry went searching for more of his military records and eventually uncovered this story.

Tobias Bowdry went into the CW with the son of his slave owner, Lt. William Bowdry, serving as his body servant. The Confederate unit they were serving in was defeated by the Union Army and they were taken as prisoners of war and sent to Union prisoner of war camp(s) in Ohio.

First to Camp Chase near Delaware, Ohio and then Lt. Bowdry was sent further North to Johnson’s Island, near Sandusky, Ohio on Lake Erie. While Tobias was kept at Camp Chase he was allowed to volunteer with the USCT and so he went into the 27th USCT which was formed at Camp Chase.
