WW II African American Port Companies & Battalions

Hello,

I am trying to learn about my father's service during WWII. He passed away on the 7th of this month, and I should like to include some of his service history in a memorial scheduled for October.

His discharge papers state that he was with the 590th Company, 376 Battalion at the time of his separation from the service in 1946. The papers also say that his place of entry in the service was New Orleans and his Military Occupational Specialty and NO. was Cargo Checker 470.

Does anyone know of the battalion or these companies? My father said that the company was made up of mostly men from Louisiana. His first stop was Hawaii, according to information from my aunt. It looks as if he were sent to Eniwetok, and then served in Saipan.

Does this particular service sound familiar to anyone? If you served in either of these port units or the battalion during WWII, or know anyone who did, please contact me.

Thank you.
