Re: pension files
In Response To: pension files ()
I don't find a Larkin Lenoir on any military databases. Could he have served under a different name ? There was a "Green Lenoir" who served in the USCT 2nd Calvary Company E. I do not find any non-military records for "Green Lenoir". According to Sophronia's pension card, Larkin Lenoir, did not apply for a civil war pension. Also, according to Sophronia's card, Larkin served in the USCT 4th Calvary Regiment Company K but according to the "Civil War Soldiers and Sailors" website, the USCT 4th was organized around the New Orleans area, it would seem unlikely that he would have signed up with a unit that far away from North Carolina.
I've had at least 2 cases where a widow applied for a pension of a deceased spouse believing that he had served in the Civil War. In one case, the widow ended up applying and getting the pension for a previous spouse that had actually served but they had been divorced. The other case, was somewhat similar to Sophronia's except that I was not convinced that her deceased spouse had served because, among other things, he seemed to be a little too young to have served in the Civil War, so I did not apply to NARA for her pension application. I would hope that the NARA would have the NARA would have retained a copy of the rejected widow's pension application.
