Louis Antoine Snaer were born 119 years apart in Hawaii and Louisiana , respectively. But Obama and Snaer have something in common that still needs to be addressed in America: how we define race. There is a picture of Snaer in the hallway of my home because he is my great-grandfather. He is standing in his Civil War uniform. He was an officer in the Louisiana Native Guard, a unit of the state militia created by the Confederacy. After the battle of New Orleans , the Louisiana Native Guard was allowed into the Union Army. This sounds very unlikely, but it happened. It happened because the Native Guard was a unit of black troops commanded by mixed-race officers. Read more. Click on the link.
