I have another Civil War related problem and I welcome your suggestions.

I have an un-named ancestor forced to enter the Confederate Army, most likely as the body servant of the master's son or as a musician. This bit of oral family history states the last sight of this ancestor was as he was marching off to war playing the piccolo. How would you suggest I go about searching this unnamed ancestor? I could not find any mention of the incident in the enslavers’ records.
