Searching for letters, journals, and other personal documents referencing the life and military service of 1st Lt. William D. Matthews. Born in Maryland about 1827, he played an active role in recruiting men for the First Kansas Colored Infantry (later the 79th U.S. Colored Infantry) in 1862. Appointed captain, he did not muster into the regiment — disallowed by the federal government due to his color. He went on to serve as a first lieutenant in Douglas' Light Artillery Battery and the Independent Battery, U.S. Colored Light Artillery. Any and all help appreciated!
