Re: Civil War veteran Sylvester Doremus
In Response To: Civil War army & navy veterans from NJ, CT, MD
() Civil War veteran Sylvester Doremus (c. 1837-1907), an African-American resident of Rahway, NJ, enlisted as a Landsman in the Union Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in NY on 13 July 1864. His pension application file indicates that he was a crew member on the Restless, and that he had a scar from a sword cut. Sylvester did not know his exact age and stated that he was born in Elizabethtown, Essex, NJ (later Elizabeth, Union, NJ). According to the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database, Sylvester Doremus, a "colored" Landsman supposedly born in England, was listed on the roster for the Minnesota and the Albemarle. The roster for the Agawam also includes Sylvester Doremus, a Landsman, supposedly born in Scotland. Messages In This Thread
