Re: USCT PA Joseph R. Adger
In Response To: Re: USCT PA Joseph R. Adger ()

Hi Lee. Thanks for the link. I checked it and the actual Bates books earlier and found no mention. At a wall of sorts now, can't find him on the rolls, but I have the obit post from Sharon Heist which says "...our departing hero joining with the first colored company formed in our city or state..and after returning to his comfortable home...he appies for a commission to recruit for our colored regiments...then after a few months we find him shipped aboard the U. S. Ticonderoga to battle against the rebels in another form. After being on board only a few days, he is taken sick and carried to his fathers on the 18th inst. and on the 22nd he died." (unknown what paper that is from), I have an obit from the Phila. Ledger saying after a short illness and death Joseph R. was to be funeralized from his father, Robert Adger's home (Robert was listed as a vice chairman in the effort to create the USCT unit in the state..his son Robert Mara, has his signature on the Frederick Douglass Broadside along with Octavius Catto who appeared to have been the impetus for Joseph joining), there is on ancestry, the denial of a pension request from the Navy for a Joseph Adger and I have the second USS Ticonderoga around June 5, 1863 heading from Philly to Cape Haitien and then returning to Philly that September then it went out again 12/11 to 12/16 1863 to Nova Scotia seeking the Chesapeake and then nothing until June 1864-6 months after Joseph dies--off the new England coast. Is it possible that Joseph's name was not recorded as one of the volunteers? Anyone have any suggestions on where I go next (working on the Navy angle but I am not direct next of kin). So many brick little time! :-)
