I was on Ancestry.com researching my family in the Military History and I found this name in the rolls of the colored military troops for the Civil War.

The gentlman's name is William Paine(Payne) of Bedford County, Va.

Now I have family in Bedford, as a matter of fact that's where my mother's family is from, however we are not directly related to the Paynes. I did however have an uncle who was a Payne, he passed about five years ago.

Anyway to make a long story short. Bedford is not a big town and seeing this information made me curious and I was wonder, how I should proceed on trying to track down this soldier and his family.

The military record had the approx. year of his birth and where he was born as well as his enlistment date and location.

What else should I look for and where else should I look.
