I was researching the name Barland and found a listing for a James M. Barland whose mother Elsy Barland filed for a Civil War Pension. I know that James Monroe Barland is the mulatto son of Andrew Barland and Elsa Jones.
James M. Barland gave his residence as Vicksburg, MS when he enlisted into the 17th Wisconsin Infantry regiment in Jan 1864.
Being curious, I checked the roster of the 17th for other enlistees who were listed with southern residences and found:
BELL, Robert, Vicksburg, MS enlisted on 18 Dec 1863 assigned as Private to Company F
CAMPBELL, Spencer, Vicksburg, MS enlisted on 1 Jul 1863 assigned as Private to Company I
CRAWFORD, John, Vicksburg, MS enlisted on 3 Feb 1864 assigned as Private to Company C
DARB, John, Natchez, MS enlisted on 26 Sep 1863 assigned as Private to Company A
DAVIS, William, Natchez, MS enlisted on 16 Sep 1863 assigned as Private to Company C
DIXON, Beverly, Vicksburg, MS enlisted on 3 Dec 1863 assigned as Private to Company C
EDWARDS, Samuel, Vicksburg, MS enlisted on 1 Dec 1863 assigned as Colored Cook to Company D
There are over 2800 names and, so far, I went from A to E. The 17th Wisconsin fought at Corinth and Vicksburg before moving further south. The unit picked up replacements as they moved through the aouth. These were runaways and some free blacks. The unit mustered out in Louisville, KY in Jul 1865.
