Here is a very enlightening article, written by Jeff McDanald for the Herald-Leader, rich with the history of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry and the tragic 'Simpsonville slaughter' that occurred. After 144 years, the first formal recognition of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry's contributions during the Civil War will take place in Shelby County, Kentucky. This article, entitled "Marker revives memory of 'Simpsonville slaughter'," also mentions the wonderful strides descendants of the USCT and others are taking to preserve the history as well as 'the mass grave and burial site associated with the ambush of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry.'
