Re: 6th U. S. Colored Heavy Artillery
In Response To: 6th U. S. Colored Heavy Artillery ()
My ggg grandfather Peter Robinson was with C company 6th US Colored Heavy Artillery. He was from VA and lived in Madison Parish LA. He enlisted and was discharged at Natchez, MS. He enlisted in 1863 and was honorably discharged in 1866. I initially sent about $14 and they sent me 10 pages. I later sent for the entire file and received 85 pages! It told me who his three slave owners were, gave a physical description of him, named his children and their birthdates, where and when their mother died and that his mother named him Peter Robinson even though his father's name was totally different. It stated that prior to his enlistment his occupation was as a slave. It gave his death date and a funeral bill submitted by his son in law who was my gg grandfather. This gg grandfather assisted him in getting his pension and appeared to do the writing for him. There was so much information that I was overwhelmed. I already knew his childrens names and this helped to confirm that he was the right person. This is the second pension file I received on a ggg grand father. The other was over 100 pages.
