Re: Civil War photographs
In Response To: Re: Civil War photographs ()

Thanks for the information. I received this from the Library of Congress today after requesting the information. This may help someone else

"...unfortunately, identifiable portrait photographs of enlisted men are very rare,
and those of African Americans even more so. However, you can see many
related photographs in the Prints and Photographs online catalog (PPOC).
Here's how to search it:

- Go to the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog at

- After reading the information on the page, click on the blue button
to agree and search the catalo.

- In the search blank that appears, type keywords that you wish to
search:
Example-

negro civil war
negro soldier civil war
negro regiment civil war
etc.

- Click on "Search.

- Click on linked titles that appear to be of interest or click on the
purple "Preview images" button to look at pictures first and then view
the catalog record and ordering information.

- Some images can be clicked on to see larger versions, while others
cannot. The images that appear only as thumbnails are those that are
either restricted due to rights, or for which the rights have not been
evaluated.

- On each catalog record there is a "How to Order Copies of This Item"
link; click there to find out about ordering copies."
