WW II Soliders In Italy
I was just watching the closing cerimonies of the Winter Olympics on NBC and saw a profile of a Africian American named Vernon Baker who served with the 101st Army Division who were called "Buffalo Soliders". The profile that they did on him was great. One of the scenes that they showed was when he was awarded the highest medal of a solider by then President Bill Clinton in 1999. This was 60 some odd years after he had fought in WW II. There was another scene that shown the Italian people honoring him for liberating them during Nazi occupation of Italy at that time. General Colin Powell was also interviewed and was one of the individuals who looked into why no African Americans had ever been awarded this medal in WW II. Vernon Baker is still living and living in Idaho.
