In 1888, the Milwaukee Sunday Telegram published a detailed article entitled "The Negro in the War. The focus of this article was the Civil War written by Major George E. Sutherland.
"The negroes were wiser than we. They well knew that the South was fighting, and would fight to the bitter end to keep them in slavery, and it followed that if the South were defeated it must mean freedom" writes Southerland.
He continues for two chapters with a description of contrabands, recruitiment of troops in New Orleans, Massachusetts, military legends like Butler and Hunter and various battles.
