In response to the question of white troops. Yes white troops did participate in the 1863 Combahee River Raid. Among them the Third Rhode Island Battery. Also most of the sailors were white. And of course Col. Montgomery was as well.
The main body however was the 2nd South Carolina, later the 34th USCT, a black regiment.
