Research S.O.S. 17th U.S.C.I.

I'm pretty good re research on black enlisted soldiers in post-Civil War regular army--but I am on real thin ice regarding service history of a specific regiment of black vols. during Civil War--the 17th United States Colored Infatnry.

Can anyone who peeks at this site guide me to some good (as in accurate) info--either via cyberspace or in print--info. on this unit?

I am still deep in my research on late l88l court-martial of army first black officer (and first black to graduate from West Point) Lt. Henry O. Flipper.
It is a complex tale, but the charges are brought against Flipper by his post (Ft. Davis, TX) commander, Co. (of the 1st U.S. Infantry) William R. Shafter. Shafter was no stranger to black enlisted regulars, having served as Lt. Col of the 38th and then the 24th Inf.

During the Civil War, Shafter held commissions in several Michigan infantrty regiments: but in April l864 he became Colonel of the newly-formed l7th U.S.C.I. Thus my interest in the 17th.

I'll greatly appreciate any and all help/direction. Be real slow and patient with any computer links--I am damn near computer illiterate and will have the rely on the kindness--not always a sure thing--of my kids who have no fear of cyberspace.
