I am not a veteran and did not have the honor of knowing Mr. Smith personally. I just read his story and the story of his fellow heroic tankers in "Brothers in Arms" by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. (A wonderful book!)

I am so very sad to know that Leonard Smith passed away before I could express my profound respect and grattitude for his courage and service to his country.

I hope that others who served in the 761st will read this message and accept my grattitude for serving so honorably and so courageously in such trying conditions. God bless you all!
