() That strict policy of segregation remained in place in the U.S. Army for over 50 years after the end of the Civil War. As late as 1916, the California Nat'l Guard still had at least one Separate Battalion of Chinese infantry. It wasn't until after U.S. entry into WW1 that American Indians and Hispanics were universally placed in the same units with whites. Even then, they were still subject to rascist treatment until WW2 and after.
