Hello,
I just stumbled across this forum and wanted to share some info and ask for some related help. I have been researching African-Americans in the Great War for several years now and recently came across a roster of black soldiers from Rockingham County Virginia. The list is fairly long, if you think you had an ancestor who might be found on this list, please email me. I hope this may be of some help to some of you out there.
Secondly, I am searching for a photograph (original or copy) of 1st Lt.Dr. Urbane F. Bass of Fredericksburg, Va. who was KIA at Monthois on Oct 6th, 1918 and posthumously recieved the Distinguished Service Cross. Dr. Bass was at the time of his enlistment, the only "colored" physician between Fredericksburg and Richmond Va. and at the age of 38 volunteered his services. He was buried in France and in 1921 was reinterred at the Fredericksburg National Cemetary. A stained glass window was dedicated in his honor at the Shiloh New Site Baptist Church in Fredericksburg.
I would welcome any correspondance with anyone who is interested in African-Americans in WWI so please don't hesitate to write.
Tom
