Wow, this is such a hard question to answer. I am assuming that whomever did this cowardly deed was a member of that family. Back then, no Social Security had to be reported so that's out. Was a police report filed? If so mabe there is a record of the reporting but then, back in the day silence was silence. Look in perhaps a newspaper from that local town.
Mabe someone who is still living in your family knows and needs a nudge via oral history.
My next thought is perhaps a dna test that is offered by AncestryDNA, FamilyTreeDNA or 23&ME may help. If your grandfather is still living a Y test taken through FTDNA may provide a clue if someone in that line had taken one. It is a straight male line test.
