I am researching an individual listed in the 1930 U.S.
Census (Limona, Hillsborough County, Florida, E.D.
122, sheet 5B) named Arthur MALLARD, b. circa 1904 in
Florida, m. circa 1928 to Maxie nee ? (b. circa 1906
in Georgia), his occupation: "dairyman"; also
enumerated were: 1) his "sister" (actually, judging by
the birth state of Georgia given for both her parents,
I think she is Maxie's sister because Maxie's parents
were also born in Georgia, while Arthur's were born in
Florida) Gossie BATTLES, b. circa 1901 in Florida, m.
circa 1916 to (?); and 2) his half-sister Bernese
BUTLER, b. circa 1914 in Florida.
While searching for clues to Arthur MALLARD's death, I
found this entry in the SSDI at Rootsweb:
Arthur MALLARD, b. 17 April 1903, d. April 1990, last
know residence "XX966 (U.S. Consulate: LIBERIA
(MONROVIA))", social security #262-01-7592 issued in
I think this may be the same person based on 1) birth
dates are a match(1903-1904), 2) the association with
Florida, and 3) the fact that he may have died in
Liberia, a country with an early history of
African-American immigration. I admit this is not much
of a case, but it's all I've found so far.
My query has to do with number 3 above. Basically,
what would he have been doing in Liberia at this date?
I understand that there was a civil war going on in
1990 in Liberia. Might his death have something to do
with this? Was he an American ex-pat living in Liberia
(and his death was reported to the U.S. Embassy in
Monrovia, explaining why that was given as his "last
known residence" in the SSDI)? Or was he an American
employee of the Embassy?
Does anyone know how to find an obituary in the
Monrovia/Liberian newspapers for 1990? Are there any
libraries in Africa, the U.S., Europe that would have
holdings of recent Liberian newpapers on microfilm?
Finally, if anyone is related to or has information on
Arthur MALLARD, I would love to hear from you. My
research interest in the MALLARD family stems from the
fact that they resided in the town of Limona in 1930.
I am researching this town (located about 10 miles
east of Tampa, Florida) and its residents and would
greatly appreciate any information.
