Hey Lisa! It is wonderful that you are going to incorporate genealogy into a learning assignment as well as a mother /son project. I'm sure that the both of you will find this is be both gratifying as well as addictive. With that being said, the first thing that I would ask you son to do is, write down the names of the people that he already knows (in the form of a pedigree chart)
The people that he knows should of course beginning with himself. Following himself, he will want to include: Himself
Let me stop right here............ how old is your son, and what are his computer capabilities. I ask this question because there is an excellent computer program called Family Tree Maker. It will allow him to create pedigree charts, books, relationship charts and so much more. With this program, there would bee no need to print the above mentioned picture. The a trial version of the program can be downloaded free at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/download/starter.aspx?
Just to answer your question...... we can help you son learn about genealogy, by guiding him into finding treasures (long lost family) giving him assistance in regards to interviewing techniques, looking up information that he may not have access to, ie. various census reports and giving encouragement if and when brick walls pop up....and ways around those brick walls I'm online often, so I will give you further guidance after hearing from you. Landra ps...... its nice to know that SOMEBODY has actually read the e-mails that I have been mailing..LOL
