A Burden/ Burdin family originated in Virginia in the 1750s when a white woman had a mixed-race child in Stafford County. The family later moved to South Carolina where David Burden was head of a "free colored" Pendleton District household in 1820.

Some members of the Burden family moved to Indiana and helped form an all African American settlement in Liberty Township, Grant County, along with the Pettifords, Weavers, Shoecrafts and others. If it is actually Burton, then it is a different family. I had a photo of the Burdine family on my website, but it seems to have been lost when I moved from my old provider. The family looked white at first glance.
The Sizemores are a very interesting family. John Sizemore was listed as white in the earliest Bladen County tax lists, then as "Molato" and "Mixt Blod & Free Negro" in 1776 [Byrd, Bladen County Tax Lists, 1775 through 1789, Vol. II, 64, 94].
So many descedants of the Sizemores claimed Cherokee descent in 1908, that Guion Miller classified them as the "Sizemore Claims." There were over 2,000 claims filed representing over 5,000 individuals who claimed descent from a Sizemore. (Over 45,000 people filed Cherokee claims hoping to receive money from the government. Only about 5,000 were actually from people with Cherokee ancestry). Miller determined that the Sizemores were a white family that had never lived within 150 miles of the Cherokees and descended fom three brothers Ned, John and Joseph Sizemore who were born between 1740 and 1760 [See claim no. 416]. They helped form the Melungeon community in East Tennessee.
