A Burden/ Burdin family originated in Virginia in the 1750s when a white woman had a mixed-race child in Stafford County. The family later moved to South Carolina where David Burden was head of a "free colored" Pendleton District household in 1820. Some members of the Burden family moved to Indiana and helped form an all African American settlement in Liberty Township, Grant County, along with the Pettifords, Weavers, Shoecrafts and others. If it is actually Burton, then it is a different family. I had a photo of the Burdine family on my website, but it seems to have been lost when I moved from my old provider. The family looked white at first glance.
