Re: John Geaween/Grawere??
In Response To: John Geaween/Grawere?? (BarbaraE.)
The original court record that names the "negro servant" John who purchased his child in 1641 has not survived. Conway Robinson (1805-1884), an eminent lawyer and reporter to the court of appeals, took notes from the court records and they are held by the Virginia Historical Society. A distinguished genealogist and historian transcribed Robinson's notes and published them in the Virginia Magazine of History and Biorgraphy and wrote John's name as "Geaween." That's what I used when I wrote earlier versions of my book. However, when I saw the original copy of Robinson's Notes, I removed John from my site because his name looks more like Grawere. I have a photocopy of that page of Robinson's Notes on my site under the Sweat family.
