Hi. I am researching the Ralph and Kate Crawford family that was emancipated by Edward Coles in 1819. They are all listed as Mulattos. He had inherited them from his father John Coles, whose planation was in Albemarle county. If in your research any of you have come across anything on them I would greatly appreciate it.
Specifically, what happened to them in Illinois after their emacipation. There was something several years ago at the Albemarle Historical Society but I have spoken to them and they do not seem to have access to the information any longer. This is all I know about them, in 1819. I would love to know their history before as well. How long had the family been with the Coles plantation or were any of them related to Edward Coles?
Ralph Crawford 46-47 & Kate 43-44 and their children
Betsey 16, Thomas 13, Mary 11-12, William 8-9
Also a Robert Crawford 25 and his sister Polly.
In all the historical articles regarding this it says that Edward Coles gave each head of house hold 160 acres. I found a Robert Crawford who owned land later (I think around 1830) who owned 160 Acres who may be the above mentioned, but nothing on Ralph, or Thomas, or William.
Thanks so much.
