Indians and Africans married each other and produced children in VA, and those children would be called Mulatto just as the offspring of African and white would have been called Mulatto.. Even when an African/Indian Mulatto married a white person, their child was often referred to as Mulatto, even though he was tri-racial, as Mulatto originally meant half Black and half whatever else rather than a smaller fraction of three races..Tri-racial is a more recent term as far as I know. But Mulatto has always meant some part Black ancestry..
