Indians who were not taxed were not enumerated on censuses up to a certain year..They were counted on a separate census..
Someone somewhere who did not want there to be any Blacks in the family started that rumor that Mulatto meant Indian and white mix, and I'm sorry, but it's just not verifiable as true.
