Re: Strange surname in GA, Freedman's Bank record
In Response To: Strange surname in GA, Freedman's Bank record ()
My name is Adam L. Adolphus, Sr. and I live in Washington County, Georgia. I am also the chairman of the African American Committee of the Washington County Historical Society. I am preparing a a manuscript for publication titled African Americans of Washington County, Georgia: From its Beginning into the Reconstruction Period. The book is an attempt to gather all documented material about African Americans of that period that I can. So far the book has over 32,000 individual names from the period from a variety of sources and currently has 864 pages of data less the index.. Harrison Strange is one of them. The information that I have about him was that on April 1, 1850 he was held by Gideon Strange of Washington County in his will. Harrison was willed along with a fifty other slaves to John, Thomas and T. C. Strange. The information from Heritage Quest is information I would like to include in the "Anecdotes and Stories" section of the book. It seems that Harrison along with at least four other African Americans joined the Union Army during the Civil War. Some of the Strange slaves moved with their holder to Florida during the mid 1850's. I would like the source data for the information that you had about Harrison in your post. Any help that you can provide in that regard will be sincerely appreciated. Also, if you have any other information, pictures or artifacts about your family members of the period, would you be willing to share it through the book? The gideon Strange Will is found on pp 25-28 of Will Book B, Washington County, Georgia Probate Court. Do you have any other information about Harrison Strange? I am new to Afrigenas and don't know all of its protocols.
