And you could not tell by looks alone.... they did it by degree of blood. I saw one list where they categorized folks by such minute quantities as up to 90/100ths of black or white "blood."

My teasin' tan aunt married a very dark brown man. Her oldest daughter is about the same color as she was, the next 3 are all dark. They would (should) all be labeled the same, based on blood. Probably would not be based on looks.
