Inever seen the word griffe either in a census record but in the register for new orleans free people of color they were many people who were recorded as griffe.Also the words mulatto,black, yellow,and negro were also used alot too to described people in the registry.
From what i understand griffe was a word to mean a mixture of native american and black ancestry.
