Re: Thomas Lucas and Nathan Lucas

Hi GiGi! I responded to your 2 emails from last night, 17 Dec, by email per your request a few moments ago. So...why is your message, time stamped a day earlier and just appearing? It's my technology fix obsession(grin)!

Just one thought though! Reba(nee) Edwards Coward, as you stated, is the mother of Beady Coward and not grand mother to the her husband. That census, I think was the 1880 census, gives her date of birth as 1796. From an earlier census I found in Greene County NC, listing Beady as child of Reba, Beady's mother's dob is much later. Reba aka Rebecca Edwards is also listed as Beady's mother on her death certificate.

I'm still very curious about Thomas' surname change. I wonder if he changed his name to enlist in the USCT at age 15, in New Bern NC and does his Army record list him using the Lucas or Fuller surname? If it list him as Thomas Lucas, that name change occurred sometime in 1866 or after in Tennessee, where his unit, the 14th Regiment, mustered out. If Fuller is used, then sometime in 1863, when Lincoln okay'ed the formation of the USCTs. Was Thomas honorably disvharged?

Regardless, he is somewhere out there when the 1870 census was enumerated. I don't think it was a criminal act because he only changed his surname, not his given name. If I was trying to hide, I would change both names.

Hang in there!
Tyronne
