Yes but not his REDMAN line. His closest REDMAN ancestor was a female, so the dna of Prof. GATES would not show any Y-dna concerning REDMANs.

I believe Prof. GATES used to have his dna in the Cumberland-Gap group there. But when I just looked, I couldn't find it there now.
If he is now in the GATES project, I am not sure which dna line is his, but would guess it might be the one in western Maryland.

I believe Prof. GATES actually has more than one REDMAN female who linked into his line.

Some REDMANs related to Prof. GATES lived in the border area between Maryland & Virginia. Starting in 1888 members of the GATES family began to use MD,Cumberland,Rose-Hill-Cemetery for burials. The GATES farm of the early 1900s was near Plum.

His ancestor John REDMAN who served in the American Revolutionary War was from VA,Hampshire-Co.
Part of VA,Hampshire-Co went into the formation of VA,Hardy-Co.
And after the American Civil War, that part of Virginia became West-Virginia.
