Looking for clues as to the ethnic/racial heritage of the CHAPMAN family of Granville Co, NC. This family first appeared there in early 1700's, a John CHAPMAN from Amelia Co, VA. A Nathaniel CHAPMAN took the Oath of Allegience in 1778 in the Nutbush District. His son may have been George CHAPMAN of Nutbush District. His sons were John and Robert CHAPMAN (b. 1800) These CHAPMANS were associated with the Richard HARGRAVES/HARGROVE family of Granville & Orange Co.
I believe some of these men were tri-racial, but can find absolutely nothing to confirm this.
