Re: 1790 Census Question
In Response To: 1790 Census Question ()
From Special List No.34
List of Free Black Heads of Families in the First Census of the United States 1790 published by the National Archives Records Service, General Services Administration Washington: 1973 is.... Edinburgh, Peter ... Number in family 2 and is found on Page 158 of that Census Manuscript.
note: the listing only gives the name of head of household, with the Number in the Family and the Page number where found. The lisiting is by name (alphbetical within State), no county listed.
The Introduction of this publication states "This list of FREE Black Heads of Families was complied from the printed volumes of the 1790 Census. The reports in the manuscripts for the 1790 census that are in the National Archives of the United States are more accurate than the printed volumes. The manuscripts have been reproduced on Microfilm Publication M637. Population Schedules of the First Census of the United States, 1790."
For more detailed information on who was/was not counted and why is also found in the Introduction.
Hope this helps
