I was just perusing the entire U.S. census for the Edinburgh surname and was to surprised to find a Peter Edinburgh (2 individuals) in Richmond County, NY in the column "Other Free Persons". Would this be people of African descent exclusively or are there other in peoples listed in this column? I've been trying to trace the slave origins of one of my related family lines named Edinburgh. During the search so far, I've observed that, in the south prior to 1865, the surname Edinburgh mainly is associated with free families of color people but I hadn't looked at any northern states before.
