Hi, If I am remembering correctly, Dr. Gates's folks lived in and around Cumberland, MD. At least that is where they were living when African American Lives was filmed. So, it is possible that he was referring to what is now WV for the origins of his family.

Also, some of his DNA info is posted on FTDNA. He traces one of his male lines to Naill of the 9 Hostages and the R1b haplogroup. This group is European. So, check the FTDNA surname projects for the Redman surname or check the R1b and is subclade projects and mailing lists.
