I know you've been at this a long time, but I was thinking about Sophia and wanted to remind you to look at different spellings. I found my great-aunt Charity Reache listed on ancestry.com as Charity Pearle and Charity Missee. My grandfather was listed as Preston Williams (his name is Preston William Sampson).

Also, the more I search all of this, the more I start to think that the Chesnutt's and the Sampsons were marrying their blood-related cousins, which is making this all the more difficult. p.s. I read that William W. Sampson married TWO Alston sisters.

The other thing is that people routinely changed their names - especially after the civil war.
