If he was an orphan in Fayetteville, there should be court records or guardianship papers on him at the North Carolina state archives. Guardianship records for Cumberland Co. are filed under the Estate Records series and available under various categories from 1796-1916 (both on paper and microfilm). It's also possible he could have been bound as an apprentice, and those records for Cumberland Co. are available 1812-1909.
