Blacks in Bedford Co., Va. circa 1786

It appears that one of my ancestor mothers was born of a young white woman of Bedford, Co. Virginia. I'm not certain where my ancestress was born, but her mother married another man in December of 1785 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. The child was born two months after the mother's marriage. Its taken 20 years to get to this point, and of course, there are a couple of major holes still. None the less I'm wondering how difficult it will be to isolate the black father there in Bedford. Anybody have access to demographics/stats for Bedford Co., in that era. I would certainly like to know what I'm looking at before I dive in head first. Was there a substantial populations of blacks, free or slave in that area at that time? I'm at the very beginning of this "thought"---so I have not even tried to isolate any slaves who may have been att. to the white family. The child was quickly "disappeared"---and most traces of her erased. Thanks for any suggestions.
