AfriGeneas Free Persons of Color Forum

Hello. Thanks for allowing me to post here.

I have ancestors who are "free persons of color" in Penn. & Maryland. Thing is, the last name is spelled in numerous ways: Bronston, Brunson, Bronson, maybe even Branson.

Thomas Bronston labeled "free person of color" in Washington County, MD. 1790. In 1800 was in Penn. near Gettysburg. Found in Mercer County, Penn. with another white man, together owning land. Many of his children names were Brunson/Bronson. Including my Elizabeth Bronson, wife of John Robbins.

Eliz. Bronson & John Robbins had 11 children, and all of them labeled "mulatto". In 1850, they came to Iowa. Center point, Linn County, Iowa. ALL 6 of their sons served in Iowa civil war regiments. Their civil war records descibe them as dark hair/eyes/complexcions. I have a photo of Eliz. Bronson Robbins and she certainly is a person of color; however, doesnt look African or Native American.

DNA has proven she is of Mediteranian descent.

Many Bronston went to Kentucky. There are other photos of them there and are definitely dark skinned.

I have reddish tan, very curly dark hair.

Still trying to find Thomas Bronston's parents. Anyone know of these people?

All the best...Steven Russell in Iowa
