AfriGeneas Free Persons of Color Forum

Rogers/Gibson/Shaver/Beatty

Folks, I am researching several mixed race/free persons of color families. All of these appear to originate in Virginia (at least as far back as I can go). Would love to communicate with anyone who is researching these families...

ROGERS: Prudence Rogers can be found in Cumberland County, VA (mid-late 1700s) where six of her children are bound out (Ann, Jane, Sarah, Elizabeth, Nathaniel and Ansel). She is in Campbell County, VA by 1783 along with son Ansel. Son, Ansel is in Henry County, VA by 1810 where he marries Frances GIBSON. They move to Washington County, VA and then cross the stateline into Sullivan. Ansel dies between 1850-1860.

One of Ansel's sons (or grandsons) George W. Rogers migrated to Lawrence County, OH where there is much info on this line.

SHAVER: A number of the Rogers men/women married Shavers. They appear to come from North Carolina into Washington County, VA/Sullivan TN. Roseannah Shaver (born 1830s married William Rogers); Rebecca Shaver (born 1820s) married James Rogers. There is a Joel and a John Shaver born 1700s here that may be the progenitor of the family in this area.

BEATTY: George W. Rogers married Margaret Anna Beattie in Johnson County, TN. She was born around 1825. It seems likely her father was a FPOC - Stephen Beattie found in Washington County, VA 1840.

Anyone searching these families? anyone have the FPOC list from Washington County, VA ??
