Re: Moore-Pettiford information requested

Ok, reason I had to wait is b/c I was at work. I have done census research for the Pettifords in NC 1790-1910 (working on 1920-1930) and I had to get home to see what I had for Craven Co. during this period.

1790-1820 has nothing for Craven Co., but in 1830 census, Hannah Pettiver (variant of Pettiford, I'm sure you know) who is a head of a household with 1 female free "colored person", which would fit for Jane. That might be a possibility. Because Hannah is unmarried (either a widow or never married apparently), I suggest starting your search in the 1822-1830 apprenticeship, bastardy bonds, and guardianship records at the NC State Archives.

This is an excellent source to see what records are available from the archives for each county: http://www.archives.ncdcr.gov/FindingAids/co_guide.pdf Also, it's been a while since I've done Craven Co. research, but I believe it's pretty thorough compared to other county records. Bastardy bonds and Apprenticeship bonds are filed by day (usually lose papers, some counties are in bound books) so you have to look through the entire year to find a record. For guardianship papers, NC had 1 session a year devoted to assigning guardians and the records are in court records.

What I can do for you tomorrow is look through some index books in the genealogy room and see if I can find any mention of Jane. If so, that would make it much easier to get a copy of the record. I'll get back to you soon.
