Actually, I made the Portuguese comment in a "tongue in cheek" manner. I had made another post on the same day about an attempted interracial marriage in Madison County, TN where the couple petitioned for an exemption to a $500 marriage fee for interracial couples. In his petition, the male of the couple claimed Portuguese heritage. Despite broad community support, the couple's petition request for an exemption was turned down. The fact is that I recalled after I responded to Tee's post that Burrell Perkins had claimed on another document that his mother was born in Florida. At the time I thought that was very strange but after Tee's post, it's making more sense. During the 1700's, Florida was controlled by Spain.
