Thanks, Louis. The marriage or marriages I'm looking for seem to have taken place in the 17-teens or 1720's. FPOC and white Harris families sharing distinctive lists of names first appear, on opposite sides of the VA-NC border, in the mid-1700's. There are hints of a similar pattern in the Southampton County Smith family, which intermarried with this group of Harrises. It suggests a border community in which racial caste lines were not yet as rigid as they later became.
