I've been noticing many surnames in my Ohio research and postings to this Forum that have PA/VA-WV origins. What I have just become aware of is the PA/VA-WV County names involved that came from the same general area of what was originally Mononogalia County. This is prior to and after the establishment of the Mason-Dixon line which separates PA from WV and some parts of MD.

Check out this site and notice when your counties of interest were formed and in which State they may now be located.

Another example of knowing the 'lay of the land' when speaking of County/State origins in terms of varying locations related to time periods.

This site answers some questions as to whether folks were born in PA or VA-WV and what the county name may have been at the time of their birth.
