Re: Henrico County, Redman family, etc.

Paul HEINEGG> not sure what you mean. Perhaps it is better if you give an example.

Example ... here is your 1801 list for VA,Hardy-Co at http://www.freeafricanamericans.com/Hardy.htm

1801 "List of Free Negroes & molattors in the Western District" [frame 348].
Blacks over 16/ Blacks under 16
Abraham Warrick & his wife & children 2/4
George 1/1
Sampson 0/1
Edward Fedler 3/7, 2 horses
John Redman 1/0
Rachel a woman 1/0
Henry Black & wife 2

-----

So in this example I am wondering if George & Sampson & Rachel have a surname. On the census we see a household name is often not repeated for every family member & I am wondering if this is what happened here ... which could make Rachel a REDMAN ?

Also for the last one "Henry Black", does black refer to his race or his surname ?

Thanks so much for all your hard work :)

NICOLE
