I found a case (from the Raleigh archives which I'll post when I get to it again--I'm in the process of transcribing all of the 1000 papers from the archives---) where white man 'A' had a woman slave 'stolen' from him by white man 'B' who had taken her for his wife. White man 'A' sued for the return of his 'property', while man 'b' sued for her emancipation to continue as his wife. Man 'B' won his case and his 'wife' was emancipated!
Obviously the course of true love was always rocky!
