Glad I can help other researchers. The Historian in Mississippi who so generously helped me told me to check the Southern Claims Commission. This was claims people had against the US Govt. for goods taken from them by the Union Army during the Civil War. You can contact the Natl. Archives to see it they have records on your relatives. I was able to find that Jordan Chavis and his son Preston had filed claims and got all the paper work. There are testimonies of other people and a lot of personal info. is disclosed. There is a charge for copying and mailing but well worth it.
By the way, I am related to the Jeffers genetically. The Chavis family married three(3) Jeffers women. I have been in touch with the Jeffers family in Arkansas and if you need any contacts let me know. I have also been in touch with the Casons, who are also related to the Chavis.
